Optimization is the last link in a chain, and the only one most people can see.
Why it matters
It works inside the space the earlier decisions left. Territory drew the boundary. The service agreement set the frequency. Booking made the promise. Skills narrowed the candidates. By the time optimisation runs, most of the outcome is already determined; it is choosing the best arrangement of a hand it was dealt.
That is why pressing the button harder does not help. A badly constrained day has no good arrangement.
How you notice it slipping
Results are rejected by hand every morning. The same complaint recurs: it does not understand our business. That complaint is usually accurate and usually means a real rule is missing from the system and living in someone’s head.
What to do
When a result looks wrong, read it as a message rather than a failure. Either a constraint is missing, or a constraint is present that nobody actually needs. Fix one of those and run it again. Across a library of operations, disciplined routing returns 15–30% of miles and 10–25% of drive time — but only once the rules it works inside describe the real business.
